Jay Middendorf Obituary

Jay Richard Middendorf, 98, Hannibal, MO, died at 8:43 p.m. on August 24, 2020, at Monroe City Manor, in Monroe City, MO.

Visitation will be Monday, August 31, 2020, from 10 a.m. till 11 a.m. at Grand View Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m., with Rev. Steve Barker officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Grand View Burial Park.

Dick was in born in Hannibal on April 5, 1922, the son of Henry Jacob and Nellie Stark Middendorf. On November 3, 1953, he married Darlene Mosley in Batesville, AR, and she preceded him in death on June 9, 2012.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Madeline Lanning; two brothers, Robert and Howard Middendorf; and a niece, Wesley Grose.

Dick is survived by six nephews, Joe (Patty) Lanning, Robert H. (Carol) Middendorf, Richard (Nikkie) Middendorf, Allen Middendorf, Robert W. (Sally) Middendorf, and Jeffery Stark Middendorf; and a niece, Marcy (Marcus) Middendorf Hastings.

Dick graduated from Hannibal High School in 1940 and in September of 1940 was hired as a clerk by the former CB&Q Railroad. On December 28, 1942 he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served 23 months in the Western Pacific during WWII as a JAP intercept operator in the Army's Radio Intelligence service and was awarded a Bronze Star. He was discharged from the Army on December 22, 1945.

In 1946 he returned to work for the BNSF Railroad where he held various clerical positions until his retirement in 1982, at the age of 60.

Dick was an avid golfer and made four holes in one after reaching the age of 70. Three of these were made at the Westview Golf Course in Quincy, where in 1983 he won the City of Quincy's Senior Golf Tournament. He made his fourth hole in one at Norwood Golf Course in Hannibal at age 84. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Emmitt J. Shields Post 55 in Hannibal. He also was a member of the First Christian Church in Hannibal.

Marcy was his caregiver for several years before his short stint in Monroe City Manor and as a family we give our sincere appreciation for the care they provided for our loving uncle.

Memorials may be given to the NEMO Animal Shelter.
