Emma Lorene Paynter Harlow of Hannibal passed away at Beth Haven Nursing Home on Sunday, May 3, 2015.
Lorene was born on December 5, 1927 in Hannibal, Missouri, to William Leroy and Lucy Marie Hagen Paynter. She was married to Elmer Glenn Harlow on May 18, 1947. He preceded her in death on January 10, 1988. She is survived by one son, Ronald Harlow (Phyliss West) of Springfield Illinois, her daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Harlow of Mexico, MO; five grandchildren, Jo Ann (Dennis) Diffenderfer of Perry, Shelly (Brian) Mortimer of Centralia, MO, Jason (Dee Dee) Harlow of Peoria IL, Jessica Harlow (Katrine Ewert) of Chicago, and Jenna Harlow of Springfield IL; ten great-grandchildren, Matthew (Samantha) Diffenderfer, Brandon Mortimer, Tanner, Skyler and Parker Harlow, Jadian, Alianna, Tatiana, William and Paxton Harlow. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Betty Paynter, of Osage Beach.
Lorene attended Clear Creek School and graduated from Hannibal High School. She was also an integral part of the Checkered Flag Restaurant which was operated by her parents. She also worked at the Shoe Factory and the Cheese Factory. After Glenn's retirement, Lorene and Glenn purchased the Parkview Motel and later Howard Johnsons Motel in Springfield, IL. They returned to their home in Hannibal and purchased the E & E Mobile Home Park in 1973. Lorene and Glenn loved to travel and spent several winters in Texas.
She attended the First Christian Church and Mt. Zion Christian Church. She was active in several organizations. She was a member of Hannibal Regional Hospital Auxiliary where she served as sewing chairwoman for several years. She was member of RSVP, AARP and CWF. She was just awarded a 50 year pin from the Grand Chapter of the Missouri Order of Eastern Star. Lorene was an avid dancer, attending dances at the armory every week. She was also an excellent seamstress and needle-worker, often inventing her own patterns.
In addition to Glenn she was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Billy Cecil Paynter, her son Joseph Glenn Harlow, and one great-grandson, Barrett Mortimer.
Visitation will be at Grand View Funeral Chapel on Saturday, May 9, 2015, from 10:00AM to 11:00AM with funeral services to follow at 11:00AM
The family suggests memorials to Hannibal Regional Hospital Auxiliary or the Hannibal Nutrition Center.
Services are under the direction of Grand View Funeral Home and Burial Park.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons and great-grandsons.
