Sherman Reed Hafner, 95, of Lake Park, NC, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, May 8th, 2024. Sherman was born in Hannibal, Missouri on May 24th, 1928.
Sherman was a graduate of Northeast Missouri State College (now known as Truman State University). He earned a BA of Science in Education in 1952, and a Masters in Art in 1961. Sherman spent his life teaching and coaching sports. Besides Missouri, he lived in Bella Vista, Arkansas and Park Forest, IL. Before retiring to the Charlotte, NC area. He was an avid golfer and had 3 Hole-In-1's over his life. Sherman also proudly served in the US Army.
Sherman is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Mary Schwehn Hafner; children Sherman Jr. (Ellen), Kent (Laurie), Mark, Martin (Pamela), Paul, Jane, and Mary Beth (Grant). He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, brother Yates; as well as numerous extended family members. Sherman was predeceased by his first wife Mary Ellen Hafner, son David and siblings Bud, Jim, Sara and Josephine.
A funeral service for Sherman will be held on Monday, May 13th, 3 PM at The Chapel at Morning Star, 12900 Idlewild Rd, Matthews, NC 28105. His burial will take place on Saturday, May 18th at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal, MO. Graveside service will begin at 12 noon.
