Mrs. Nelson was born February 20, 1924, in Hannibal, to Cecil Alexander Turner and Estelle Frances Tate Turner. She attended Clear Creek School. She married William Kenton Epperson in Hannibal on February 14, 1941. She married John Paul Griffen Sr. on April 5, 1945. She married Ray Franklin Nelson on July 9, 1966 and they were married 48 years prior to his death in 2014. Survivors include one sister, Carlita Turner Epperson, New London; four daughters and four sons: Cheryl (Cherie) Epperson Parsons (Mike), New London: Donald Nelson, Port Charlotte, FL; Gary Nelson (Chris), New London; Pastor Walter Griffen (Kathy), Unionville; Catherine Griffen Jennings, Frankford; Jeanna Nelson Jozaitis (Pat), Saverton; Scott Griffen (Laura), Saverton; and Holly Griffen, Palmyra; along with 17 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She loved all of her children, grands, and greats. She was one of those "mean" parents who her children appreciated when they were old enough to understand why she was so strict. Twenty years stretched between her oldest to her youngest child creating ten different perspectives of the same memories. The oldest three children knew a different part of Lois than the three youngest, and still another with the middle four. She was preceded in death by both parents, three husbands; one sister, Delphine Marie (Turner) Deorle, Quincy; and two sons, Cecil (Butch) Epperson, Gibsonton, FL; and John (Jaybird) Griffen Jr., New London. She resided at Willow Care Nursing Home since January 2014. She made friends easily and enjoyed dancing and singing in her wheelchair. Lois attended First United Methodist Church, of Hannibal. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior in 1984. She enjoyed music nights at The Gospel Shed. She worked at the Shoe Factory, Griffen' s Greenhouse, Hannibal Courier Post, and Foam Air Packaging. Her favorite "jobs" were being a sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, not only to her own, but to anyone who walked into her home. She deeply enjoyed flowers, animals, nature, arts and crafts, and music. There was not a tree, flower, or animal she could not name. She was very creative and expressed herself through painting, sewing, cooking, gardening, decorating, crafts, and dreaming. She played piano, guitar, steel guitar, and harmonica-all by ear. She loved to sing and yodel, even at age 92. Lois's favorite pastime was playing practical jokes. One of her favorites was whenever the family started a new puzzle, she would sneak over and take one piece out. Then, when we got to the last piece and couldn't find it, she would proudly announce that she had it. She was an Annie Oakley and was handy with her 410. She'd been known to shoot squirrels and turkeys. One time she shot a wolf between the eyes when it was after her chickens.
