Genevieve Nora Bethel

Genevieve N. Weldy Bethel, 105, of New London, MO, died at 3:55 p.m. on Monday, December 5, 2016, at the Beth Haven Nursing Home in Hannibal.
Visitation will be Friday, December 9, 2016, from 10 a.m. until time of services at the First Baptist Church of New London.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 9, 2016, at the First Baptist Church. Rev. Brian Ninedorf will officiate. Burial will follow at the Salem Cemetery in Center, MO.
Genevieve was born on September 1, 1911, in Ralls County, the daughter of Charles and Josie Adams Weldy. She was first married to Earl Benns, who preceded her in death. She then married Cornelius "Gunny" Bethel on May 24, 1956, and he also preceded her in death in 1985.
Her parents; a stepson, Charles Randall Bethel; four sisters, Lola Lieurance Riggs Goodman, Edna Weldy, Ethel Weldy and Hazel Rissmiller Cordell; and three brothers, Osie Weldy, Owen Weldy and Teddie Weldy, preceded her in death.
She is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.
Honorary Pallbearers are a niece, Imogene Hallows; three nephews, C.H. Weldy, Wayne Weldy and Harold Lieurance; and her many great, great great and great great great nieces and nephews.
Genevieve spent her entire life near Frankford and New London, MO. She Joined the work force in the 1930's during the Great Depression and for a time was employed by the WPA. She rode five miles to her job on horseback to work a nine hour day, leaving her horse in a nearby barn owned by her aunt and uncle. She also worked for many years as a machine operator in several shoe and garment factories in Vandalia, New London and Hannibal.
After retirement she became a volunteer at the Retired Senior Volunteer Program until she was ninety. Genevieve faithfully attended the Senior Dances at the armory as long as her health allowed. She lived in her own home until the age of ninetysix, then moved to an apartment at the new Pleasant View Assisted Living in Hannibal where she became their second resident. Genevieve was a member of the First Baptist Church of New London.
