Gary Jackson, 71, formerly of Hannibal, MO, died at 3:37 p.m. on March 12, 2019, at the Luther Manor Nursing Facility in Hannibal, MO.
Visitation will be March 16, 2019, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Grand View Funeral Home in Hannibal, MO. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. at Grand View Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Burkey officiating.
Gary was born on May 13, 1947, in Hannibal, MO, to Lester Leon and Juanita Bell Jackson. Gary was married to Robin Johnson in 1973, in Seattle, WA.
He is survived by a son, Jason Banks Jackson; two daughters, Anna Christine Jackson and Nina Natasha Jackson; a sister, Becky Burch; and one grandchild.
He graduated from Hannibal High School in 1965, took Pre-Engineering at Hannibal La-Grange University, Hannibal, MO, and completed his Bachelor of Architecture and College of Environmental Design from the University of Nebraska in 1971.
Gary began his career as a R.O.W-draftsperson for the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles in Lincoln, NE. He then went to work for a Quincy, IL, firm as a designer, draftsperson, and scale model builder.
In 1975, he became a Senior Construction Field Engineer and worked for several engineering firms. Projects included the demolition and removal of the only US Navy Submarine Torpedo Factory, construction on Jackson Park; a 350-unit navy officer housing facility in Bremerton; the berthing of the new USCG Cutter Hollyhock; the new facility construction of USCG Station, Port Huron, MI; ensuring compliance for the 167th Airlift Wing, Martinsburg W.VA: a 260 million dollar construction program for new facilities required for the operation of a fleet of C-5, USAF aircraft; and a Construction Field Administrator to ensure compliance with contract design documents in the state of VA.
As a Civil Engineer for the Jacobs Engineering Group, LLC, in Arlington, VA, he coordinated the construction of the Russell Building Garage Steam Tunnel for the United States Capital Power Plant and worked on the Thomas Jefferson Building, the largest, most costly, and safest library in the world. He served as a Civilian Engineer for the Air Force Global Strike Command, 509th Bomb Wing, at Whiteman AFB, Knob Noster, MO.
He was Chief/Designer for a regional one million square foot Pacific Northwest enclosed mall for retail shopping, numerous professional office buildings, fast food, and surrounding complexes for New Town, near Bangor-U.S. Navy Base, Silverdale, Washington.
Other projects included a public concrete parking garage for the University of Michigan and the remodeling of a project for the U.S. Army Facilities in Rock Island, Illinois.
As the only Staff Architect for Frank E Basil, Inc. he traveled within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on numerous projects, including sport facilities complexes with swimming pools to soccer fields in Riyadh; a multi-facility complex with a 350 bed King Abdul Aziz Hospital; Haw's, a Shopping Center for Women only, in Jeddah, and the layout solution in the city park complex for His Majesty King Fahad Bin Aziz A'l Saud.
His career included being the Head Designer for numerous projects including churches; single family homes; commercial shopping centers; fine dining restaurants; fast food restaurants; the Indianwood Golf and Country Club in Lake Orion, MI; commercial alpine ski-resorts; office park buildings; a 32 bed hospice health care complex; an architectural study for MODT for I-75 high-traffic flow problems and security measures; and for an open air ‘Pine Knob' music-amphitheater also in Lake Orion, MI.
