Alberta Swan

Alberta Swan, age 94, originally of Hannibal, passed away at 4:56 pm Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Cox Medical Center South in Springfield, MO.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday September 19, 2026 at Grand View Burial Park. Rev. Jason Young will officiate.

Alberta was born on March 29, 1932, in Bynumville, MO, to Charles and Anna (Shoemaker) Miller.

She was united in marriage to Robert Swan on December 25, 1948 in Hannibal.

Alberta is survived by two daughters, Barbara Gielow (Ron) of Springfield, MO, and Linda Baker, of Lawrence KS; two granddaughters, Susan Hebenstreit (Andy) of Springfield, MO, Leigh Sands (Rob) of Lawrence KS, and grandson Brett Baker (Jennifer) of Virginia; six great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Patrick, Ellie, Brendan, Lucas, and Ben; and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles & Anna Miller; her husband, Robert Swan, nine bothers and sisters, a grandson, Derek Gielow, and her son-in-law, Ron Gielow.

Professionally, Alberta worked as a bookkeeper.

Alberta, also known as Birdie, was loved by everyone. She had an amazing sense of humor, and she made everyone feel welcome.

A very athletic person, she was successful as a golfer, softball player, and in tennis.

Birdie was the “Fun Grandma” and was always doing fun things like playing games, dancing, and being silly with her grandkids. Going to Grandma’s house was filled with joy and laughter.

She was a proud Air Force wife. Birdie married Robert when she was 17 and loved serving her country by supporting her husband in his career in the Air Force. She was a large part of the Air Force wives club, and supportive of all veterans.

She was famous for her coconut crème pie, spicy pretzels, and cashew chicken.

Birdie was a wonderful mom. She spoke to both daughters on a daily basis and remained close to them throughout her life

Her sons-in-law adored her. When people would make wicked mother-in-law jokes, they would be known to say “not mine,” and let everyone know she was the best.

She was the last of ten brothers and sisters that all grew up in Hannibal. Many fun and memorable events were held at Camp Okitipi, Mark Twain Cave Park, and at both of her sisters’ houses.
