Wallace Smashey Obituary

Wallace Smashey, 96, of Hannibal, MO, died at 5:23 a.m. on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

Visitation will be Friday, January 20, 2017, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Grand View Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2017, at the Grand View Funeral Home in Hannibal. Rev. Chuck Todd and David Smashey will officiate. Burial will follow at the Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal.

Wallace was born on September 12 1920, in Hannibal, MO, the son of Russel and Lulu Bell Moore Smashey. He married Helen Yarbrough in her parents' home, and she preceded him in death.

His parents also preceded him in death, along with four brothers, Russell, Francis, David and Clarence; two sisters, Levena Dickensheets and Miriam Nixon; and two grandchildren, John Matthew Gallaher and Grace Lynne Smashey.

He is survived by one son, David (Cody) Smashey; two daughters, Jean Kruse and Marsha Smashey; one brother Emory Smashey; and three grandchildren, Hope Smashey, Joshua Smashey and Caleb Smashey.

Pallbearers are Joe Tate, Bruce Brosi, Dennis Smith, Larry Winn, Tom Benjamin, and Emory Smashey Jr.

Wallace served in the Navy from July 1941 to October 1943. He was stationed at North Island in San Diego when Pearl Harbor was attacked. He was then stationed at Pearl Harbor for the remainder of the war. He was a member at the First Nazarene Church for 25 years, serving on the board and teaching Sunday school classes. He started and pastored the Triune Cathedral in the old Orpheum Theater. He also assisted with the Bridge Street Ministry in Hannibal. Wallace owned and operated Smashey Construction in Hannibal, specializing in building homes and local churches.

Memorials may be sent to the Salvation Army or Grace Covenant Baptist Church.
