Lilllian Straub Obituary

Josephine (Haydon) Straub, 98, of Monroe City, passed away Wednesday, Sept 9, 2020 at the Monroe City Manor, Monroe City.

Visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. Monday, September 14, 2020 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, West Ely, Mo. and the funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. Masks are required. Burial will follow at Grand View Cemetery, Hannibal, Mo.

She was born December 13, 1921 in their home south of Hannibal, Mo, the daughter of William A. and Sarah Minta Collins Haydon. She married Rayford Straub on April 29, 1945 in Hannibal, MO. And he preceded her in death.

She is survived by two daughters, Theresa (Dave) Johnson and Janice (Parker) Kendrick; eight grandchildren, Doug (Becky) Dexter, Dane Johnson, Dee (Robert) Shrum, Jacob (Keri) Kendrick, Paula Sullivan, Pamla Kendrick, Jared Kendrick and Jacqueline (Zack) Price;
eleven great grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Judith (Larry) Dexter; her parents; and five siblings, James Haydon, Ruth Shinn, Ruby Sheehan, Carl Haydon, and Alfred Haydon.

She was a dedicated farm wife who worked very hard, had a great garden and drove the tractor when needed and did whatever else was asked of her. She and Rayford traveled extensively. They were in all 50 states; Alaska four times and to the Arctic Circle. They toured Scandinavia, and toured Russia and East Germany while those countries were still under Communist control. They also traveled to Australia.

She crocheted numerous afghans and made beautiful quilts. Many people received as gifts Josephine's beautiful handwork.
She enjoyed playing cards and dominoes and had an active social life.

Grand View became a cemetery in 1934 and her family lived across what is now 61 highway from there. Her family farmed the land where the cemetery is before it was a cemetery.
